If you haven’t seen the latest Star Wars Episode 8 trailer, you might want to stop reading this (and get out of the house more often). The very last lines we hear from a in the trailer are from Luke, in which he states, “I only know one truth: It’s time for the Jedi to end.”
If anything, this is great marketing for the new movie. It’s’ extremely cryptic and none of us ever expected to hear Luke say those words. What could he possibly mean? There have been many theories already posted online. Some people think that Luke is reading from some ancient manuscript, and others think that he turned to the Dark Side of the Force.
I believe that the answer lies somewhere inbetween.
Throughout the movies, there is an underlying theme that there is balance in the Force. Perhaps Luke has realized that the Jedi Order has actually been disturbing the balance of the Force, which actually makes the Sith stronger.
“You were the chosen one! It was said you would bring balance to the Force… not leave it in darkness!”
This theory makes sense if you believe that Anakin fulfilled the prophecy of the Jedi that he would bring balance to The Force. He eliminated most of the Jedi, and then destroyed the Sith Lord Palpatine. At the end of Return of the Jedi, the force is now balanced with Luke being the sole Jedi. Now fast forward to Star Wars episode 7. Luke started a new Jedi academy and was training Jedi, hence making the Force less balanced. I argue that this imbalance is what caused the rise of Supreme leader Snoke, and the first order.
The Sith can only grow strong when the Force is out of balance. Luke has come to realize that, and now believes that orders like the Jedi or the Sith cannot exist if the Force is to be balanced, and if true peace is to reign in the Universe.
I could be totally wrong, but it would be one hell of a story line.
